Is Diesel Worth it? Nope.

If you were trying to pick between a car that burns regular unleaded versus a car that burns diesel because it is more fuel efficient... keep your money in your pocket.

24 years... how long it will take to make back the higher purchase price from fuel savings.

Here are the numbers:  Using a 2011 VW as a model, if you drive 10,000 miles a year, the car burning regular unleaded will cost you $990 in fuel.  The diesel version will cost you $878 for the same 10,000 miles.  SCORE!  Not really... The diesel version will cost you $2799 more to buy.  So....to break even.... 24 years of driving 10,000 miles and these two cars would have cost you the same for purchase and fuel.

Numbers used in the math:  Reg unleaded gets 33 MPG while diesel gets 42 MPG.  Reg unleaded price $3.27 per gal and diesel price $3.69 per gal.
